Jessica Simpson takes a step out of her comfort zone

Jessica Simpson’s The Price of Beauty, a new reality show, aired today on VH1. The last reality show that I watched starring Jessica Simpson was The Newly Wed’s. Although then she was not portrayed as the brightest tool in the tool box I gave her the benefit of the doubt that it was six years later and tuned in at 10:00pm. The show is unique; it revolves around Jessica and her friends traveling around the world to explore how different cultures define beauty. In some cultures women take great lengths in order to achieve their view of beauty.

Simpson and her friends explore Northern Thailand on the first episode where the longer the neck the more beautiful a woman appears. To achieve this beauty, Jessica and her friends observe that the women of Thailand wear 20 pound rings around their necks in order to elongate them! Although the weighing rings crush the women’s clavicles, it is the price the pay to look beautiful.

After watching this it really amazed me how certain cultures define beauty and how far the women go to obtain it. If every culture has a different view of beauty then can one truly define what beauty is? I think that instead of filling into a culture’s view of beauty that beauty is only found in those who don’t seek to find it, but already see it in themselves. To me beauty is confidence in oneself and should not be defined to look or act a certain way. I believe standing out confidently as an individual is the true form of beauty instead of conforming to society’s view.
