From time to time I like to watch MTV’s Hitlist to see the latest music videos for my favorite songs. MTV’s Hitlist is a single channel that solely focuses on showing the latest videos of the billboard’s top one hundred artists. While tuning into the station I happened to come across Christina Aguilera’s new video “I’m not myself tonight” off her new album, Bionic. Christina Aguilera has been in the pop music industry since the early 2000s battling against other pop artists like Madonna and Britney Spears. Since it was her first video in a year or so I expected “I’m not myself tonight” to be a catchy, vivid, different form of entertainment. Instead I got a blah video that was trashy, unoriginal, and not memorable.
The point of the video Christina is trying to show is that she is not herself for a night and acts out of her comfort zone. It was clear to me that she was not herself tonight because every other scene in the video looked similar to other works of art I’ve seen before. For instance, in one shot Christina’s hair is in the same style as Beyonce’s in a previous video. As well, in the video Christina demonstrates that since she’s not herself tonight because her sexuality sways. While watching this I kept thinking “THIS HAS BEEN DONE BEFORE” by pop princess, Britney Spears, in her video “3”
Throughout the decade that Christina has been in the music business to this day I cannot tell you what her true identity is. Every year she’s following a new artist’s videos or concepts, never creating something original. She’s not the only one, many old and new artists do not know how to appeal to the public and get swayed to displaying music that is “in”, which is what a good artist does. A great artist is able to start their own trends and artistic movement to change the form of music not to conform within the business. Hopefully, artists like Christina can become more original before they bore us all with their played out performances and auto-tuned voices.
